The reality of our history...
Tonight, amidst our Gottingen journey, Mark took me to the Jewish Memorial. It sits in the location of the old synagogue. I must admit that I was hesitant to look too closely. It seems that both here and in the DC Holocaust Museum, getting close is a fear. However, Mark and I entered this sacred space to remember our past and those who were murdered for ideology.
The memorial is in a neighborhood - and many of the names listed were young children and teenagers. Many young people, who are still living today, would have seen their neighbors disappear into the hands of the Nazis. What is amazing is the question that Mark posed. What would it have been like to see friends disappear into the hands of a regime you approved of?
The tower is the star of David at its base. in Christ there is neither Jew or Gentile, Slave or Free....
The words in the picture say: The Jewish Citizens of the state and city of Gottingen, Children, Women, and Men - murdered in the dark times, 1933-1945.
